Motivational Interviewing as a Practice Innovation in Child Welfare
Held on April 14, 2011, this webinar is an opportunity to hear about implementing Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a practice innovation in child welfare agencies from two perspectives. First, Anita Barbee (University of Louisville) discusses her experiences training supervisors in Oklahoma in MI to help them integrate MI in their practice. She reviews the highlights of MI; provides examples of how they worked through cases in order to apply the principles and practices of MI; along with describing the implications for clarifying caseworker thoughts about cases. Dr. Barbee concludes with how MI can be integrated into daily practice and dovetails with many practice models. Next, Frederick Strieder and Debra Linsenmeyer (University of Maryland) describe training MI to field instructors and student trainees as part of their workforce project. They cover: the context of their workforce project, why MI fits with child welfare, and the implementation process for this training project. The University of Maryland team’s presentation concludes with a student, Timera Dennis, talking about her experiences with the project.
